Aztecs are simply “Sonoma County South”

by pinella

As you watch the players in this year’s North Coast Section tournament remember many of them will be playing at the “next level” real soon.

If you don’t think the players you are watching have talent, take a look at some who played in this tournament not so long ago.

For instance,  look at Div. I San Diego State. The Aztecs will face BYU on Saturday for the championship of the Mountain West Conference tournament. SDSU enters the game riding a 14-game unbeaten streak, a 13-3-5 overall record and coming off a semifinal 2-1 overtime win over Utah.

And guess what else – the SDSU midfield and defense are anchored by three Empire products.

Ursuline product Megan McQueeny, a sophomore defender, has started 20 of the Aztecs’ 21 games so far and scored a goal.

Montgomery High grad Gretel Amman, a defender/midfielder, has been in all 21 games and started 20 of them with a goal and an assist.

And another Vikings’ grad, Tiffany Hurst, likewise a defender/midfielder, has played in 19 games, 17 as a starter and has a goal and three assists.

Their coach, Mike Friesen, is a 1996 SSU graduate.

The No. 2 seeded Aztecs take on top-seed Brigham Young, the No. 8 ranked team in the country, at 11 a.m. Saturday in Provo, Utah.

So, think twice before you even wonder if we have any women’s soccer talent in the Empire. Go Aztecs!

Noteworthy as well is that Megan was named First-Team all Conference and is considered by many the best center back in the league.

Friesen was named Coach of the Year and has certainly turned that program around…tapping into SO CO talent.

Bill, how about an interview with all those guys after the season? Gretel’s bro is at Stanford and Tiffany’s bro is at SSU…a couple good storylines for you.
