Some observations 24 hours after the first round

by pinella

Actioin from Wednesday night's Analy at Maria Carrillo boys playoff game.

Actioin from Wednesday night's Analy at Maria Carrillo boys playoff game.

Now we are down to the Elite Eight in all four mini-tournaments (remember there are no regionals or state playoffs…..yet).

So, what’s next on the pitch. Well, for starters there are some lovely matchups and all games will be contested on Saturday.

Let’s start with the Boys Division I quarterfinal pairings:

- Analy at Marin Catholic, 2 p.m.

- Elsie Allen at Terra Linda, 2 p.m.

- Tamalpais at Santa Rosa, 7 p.m.

- Casa Grande at Windsor, 7 p.m.

NOTES: Let’s give the NCS a little love for arranging this so anyone can partake of two games on Saturday instead of one … the Analy/Marin Catholic winner may well move on to win it all … if I sense an upset, and it would only be a mild one, it would be Elsie Allen over Terra Linda…don’t know about TL’s field but the other three are artifical so rain won’t be a factor.

Now, for the Girls Div. I:

Sonoma Valley at Montgomery, 7 p.m.

Windsor at Santa Rosa, 5 p.m.

Arcata at Casa Grande, 7 p.m.

Petaluma at Maria Carrillo, 7 p.m.

NOTES: Matchup of the day: Trojans at Pumas. Wow, definitely this one should be worth the price of admission… upset special? If there is one it will be Windsor over Santa Rosa… I’ll try to find out more about that Arcata win over Ursuline, but from what I am reading in the way of comments on this blog it sounds like the officials really messed this one up…

On to the Boys Div. III

International at Marin Academy, 2:30 p.m.

Fort Bragg vs. Calistoga at Napa Country Fairgrounds, 1:30 p.m.

Roseland Prep vs. Branson at College of Marin, 2 p.m.

SF University vs. Anderson  Valley at Mendocino County Fairgrounds, 7 p.m.

NOTES: Well, we have four of the Empire’s small school boys teams still alive. Can they survive? Doubtful, but we shall see…best bet for an upset? How about Roseland Prep over Branson…

Now the Girls Div. III

Calistoga at Sonoma Academy, 2:30 p.m.

Clear Lake vs. Ferndale at Fortuna, 7 p.m.

Roseland Prep vs. St. Vincent at Rancho Cotate High, 7 p.m.

St. Helena at Middletown, 7 p.m.

NOTES: Can anyone dethrone the S.A. Coyotes? Doubtful, although they are not as strong as they were a year ago…Upset possibility: Clear Lake over Ferndale…

Another Sonoma fan who thought the your team was way better then it was. 4 goals by a mediocre Tam team.

How did this situation with UHS occur. REFS are acknowledged for their ability by being allowed to ref these play-off games. The UHS soccer players were truly victimized. Their job was to play the game. When the ref gave the instructions concerning OT and that they were playing 2 10 minute ots without a goden goal, no alternative ref or coach spoke up.Why was the higher seeded UHS even playing a lower seeded school on their field for a play-off game?

    TO THE NCS,

I THINK THEY SHOULD CHANGE WHEN GAMES ARE PLAYED. IF A TEAM HAS TO TRAVEL MORE THAN A CERTAIN TIME, LIKE SAY 2-3 HOURS, THEY SHOULD ALLOW THESE GAMES TO BE PLAYED ON A WEEKEND. THIS WAY THE STUDENTS DO NOT MISS SCHOOL, DON’T HAVE TO BE STRESSED ABOUT LEAVING AND TRAVELING FAR, DON’T COME HOME AT A LATE HOUR AND MAYBE MISS SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY BECAUSE THEY ARE SO TIRED. I THINK THE NCS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE IN THE FUTURE IF ANYONE IS HURT BECAUSE OF THIS. PLAYING A GAME ON THE WEEKEND MAKES SENSE FOR ALL CONCERNED, AND HEY THE NSC WILL GET MORE MONEY BECAUSE PARENTS AND FRIENDS, ETC CAN ATTEND. IT IS A WIN WIN SITUATION FOR ALL. DON’T MAKE THE STUDENTS TRAVEL ON A SCHOOL NIGHT, IT IS TRULY UNFAIR!!!! ARE YOU LISTENING NCS OR PRESS DEMOCRAT. PARENTS SHOULD PUSH THIS ISSUE.

The time has come the walrus said…
    MC over Analy
    TL over EA
    SR over Tam
    Windsor over Casa
why do you have to predict scores unless you are at Vegas…

Love the Dragons, but Monty wins
Windsor over SR (boys and girls victorious in this round)
    Casa over Arcata
MC – Petaluma toss up.. Ralph the better coach will figure it out

Marin Academy is the class of DIII. Only Branson comes close.
Frankly MA would likely, if they were focused, test any D1 school.

SA will prevail on the Ladies side.

He’s back! Mr. Toad is back on his wild ride down state playoff lane. Had Bill gotten off his duff and gone to the meeting held many, many months ago at Elsie to discuss this…he wouldn’t be exposing his delusional side. The meeting exposed the FACT there is not now nor ever has ever been discussions or even hints at even a regional playoff…let alone a state playoff, it was all a ruse intended to deceive NBL players and parents. CIF has zero interest in such a topic. None and I mean NONE…..as in exactly zero of the Regions have any interest in even having the discussion about a playoff scenario. Had Bill made a phone call or two to regional Directors or the President of CIF, he could have easily found this out and ended the discussion before it left the gate.

The part Mr. Toad doesn’t understand: the CIF considers soccer to be costly irritation and nothing more. Yes, there are local enthusiasts all over the state who keep the sport alive but the reality is, it’s a money loser and consumer of resources so therefore an irritation. The CIF, including the local Regional Directors down to the majority of school principals and AD’s, especially the AD’s wouldn’t lose any sleep if soccer just “went away”. The CIF wouldn’t spend the energy to even think this through, let alone set something up.

For us locally, it was all the fabrication of a couple of the local AD’s and principal’s trying to get the soccer teams off the football fields during the fall and nothing more. Remember how the NBL governing folk tried to pull a fast one and ram this through while we were all in bed? When exposed for violating the Brown Act, they claimed ignorance of such a silly law. Why should they have to deal with this in the open, after all aren’t they in charge? The “non school” affiliated members of the NBL should have resigned in disgrace for such an attempt. It exposed them to be just part of the “old boy’s group”. To claim ignorance is insulting on several levels. The sad part was, out of ignorance the Press Democrat pushed by Mr. Toad ran with this as though there was some merit to the idea. All the while being little more than a dupe.

    HEY BEAR FAN

URSULINE MIGHT NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS DUE TO THE FACT THE THAT REF’S BLEW A MAJOR CALL IN THEIR LAST GAME OF THE SEASON. YOU REMEMBER, THE TIME YOUR GOALIE PUNCHED THE BALL THAT HIT THE INSIDE BACK PART OF THE CROSSBAR AND NET RESULTING IN A NON-GOAL, BECAUSE THE AR WAS SO OUT OF POSITION. I GUESS IT’S OK IF THE CALL’S GO IN YOUR FAVOR, BUT UNFAIR WHEN THE CALL GOES AGAINST YOU.

Greetings and salutations from the ALMIGHTY….no not that one ….he or she…is way to busy to be worrying about Soccer right now….the other ALMIGHTY….FANATICO…..it is Friday and Fanatico is about to post his picks….Fanatico has been couped up in a cabin up in the hills of Middletown just for this reason….to make sure he was away from all technology and any interruptions that might sway his picks for the Quarter final games….so get your pencils and brackets out so we can begin:

Marin Academy vs International- This should be a good game and Fanatico thinks International will put up a good fight but FANTICO SAYS: MA 3 IHS 1.
Calistoga vs Fort Bragg- Fanatico likes what he sees with Fort Bragg but the Wildcats are too strong
FANATICO SAYS: Calistoga 3- Fort Bragg 2
Branson vs RUP- Branson is a good team but Fanatico will go out on a limb here…FANATICO SAYS:Branson 1 RUP 2
Anderson Valley vs University-They don’t do anything else up in Boonville but play soccer…FANATICO SAYS: Anderson Valley 3 University 1
    D3 Girls:
Sonoma Academy vs Calistoga-Sonoma Academy here FANATICO SAYS SA 5- Calistoga 0
Ferndale vs Clear Lake- Clear Lake should win this game. FANATICO SAYS:Clear Lake 4 Ferndale 2.
St. Vincent vs RUP- St. Vincent’s is strong with all those girls from Novato and Petaluma…FANATICO SAYS; ST. Vincents 4 RUP 1.
Middletown vs St. Helena- FANATICO SAYS Middletown 2 St. Helena 1.

    D 1 Girls
Monty vs SVHS- Sonoma has done better than the boys…but what is new…but their run ends here..FANATICO SAYS Monty 3 SVHS 0
Santa Rosa vs Windsor-Fanatico thinks this could be the game of this round…both teams are strong it will boil down to who makes a mistake and they will lose…Fanatico thinks SR will make the mistake…and WHS will capitalize…FANATICO SAYS: SRHS 0 WHS 1
Casa Grande vs Arcata- it will be a long drive back up north for Arcata..FANATICO SAYS CGHS 3 ARCATA 1
MCHS vs PHS- Petaluma is good but Carrillo is better here….and Carrillo has something to prove…MCHS 1 PHS 0.

    D1 Boys
MC vs Analy-Coach Meecham has been here before and he knows what it takes…but he doesn’t have the “tigers” that he needs…but Fanatico is Sonoma County sooo…FANATICO SAYS: Analy 2 MC 1….Fanatico knows that it’s an upset…but what the heck…Fanatico said Redwood would beat MC also…
Terra Linda vs EAHS- another great match up…both good teams…FANATICO SAYS TL 1 EAHS 2.
SRHS vs Tam- Santa Rosa plays well and they continue to impress they shouldn’t get challenged here but Tam did beat SVHS…(who had impressed Fanatico vs Windsor) but FANATICO SAYS SRHS 2 Tam 0.
Windsor vs Casa Grande… Windsor should get challenged here Casa has played Windsor well can they pull off an upset…they have to believe will they….yea they will but…FANATICO SAYS WHS 2 CASA 0….Fanatico will be out watching a couple games…keep an eye out for him…he will be the one with the binoculars keeping a close eye on the pitch….so until saturday night…FANATICO OUT!!!

    To Dragon Dreaming
    3 of Tam’s goals were on PK’s.
    Rather unusual yes????
Did not see the game, but any team of NCS caliber, should not be making those kinds of mistakes. 3 fouls in the box!!!!
Were they hard fouls, hand balls, what?
    Who was the center….?
    So many questions.
Tam is not mediocre, SR will get a game. SR remembers their MA lesson.

I do not know if the Trojans will be able to beat Carrillo, But I would like to thank the 5 girls who have been playing for them since their freshman year for the entertainment they have provided me with the last four years. Kirsten H and J essica H are two of the hardest working kids you will see on the pitch they just keep coming at you all the time. Lizzie M is as complete a player as you will see, she can play any possition on the field. Natalee Simon might be the most dynamic player you will see everyone has to game plan to stop her.And Taylor Gehring is the leader and as dominate player as you will see in the back. I would like to thank these girls and wish them luck in their college endevers.

Two of TAM’s goals were on PK’s. One was on a free kick. Sonoma fouled TAM at least 8 times in their defending 1/3 of the field because of the pressure they put on their defense. The center was actually one of the top guys in the Sonoma county refs association.

Bye the way… TAM has two ties and a win against teams rank in the top 7 in the NCS

To BeaFan and all Ursuline fans…

stop your bellyaching about the refs and pin the blame where it belongs…on your own school’s adminstration. Your own principal and athletic director forced your team to make the long trip north (boo hoo, lots of other SoCo teams have, byt he way, deal with it like everyone else). But it seems the stadium is reserved only for precious football.

Why would any soccer player want to play for Newman or Ursuline, knowing how they are completely depised by their own school?

  13. November 6th, 2009 11:00 pm

BearFan, I will answer your last question– why was Ursuline playing away in Humboldt County despite being the higher seed? It was because Ursuline’s AD did not turn in the application to NCS to host a playoff game. You can’t host a playoff game if you don’t turn the application in.

  14. November 7th, 2009 10:10 am

Just a suggestion…but after observing numerous games this season, it seems that it is pretty difficult for the refs to keep up with the pace of the game. I say this with respect and stated simply as a fact. These boys are in such good condition, and again respectfully, years younger than majority of the refs. How about having 2 center refs, one for each half of the pitch and keep the 2 AR’s also. I know, someone will comment that it will make the sport too costly as it is not a revenue generating activity, but isn’t everything always about the money? How about the kids?

  15. November 7th, 2009 10:14 am

Regarding knowledge of NCS or League soccer rules in general, what happened to Ursuline has happened before. Although not an NCS match, but a league match last year important to the respective teams, the overtime ruling was botched as well, allowing for golden goal when the rules specifically state 2 10-min OTs – and it was a head referee that made the call. One of the coach’s questioned the call before OT play began, but ref overruled. Unfortunate.

  16. November 7th, 2009 2:35 pm

To suggestion: It could be a good idea but not financially viable; also, the 4 man system has never been used in California as far as I know, in HS or at any other level. Not to say it couldn’t someday, but now is definitely not the time. The better solution is to make sure center referees (and AR’s, but especially centers) are in top physical shape; the most challenging HS games should go to centers who are (1) most experienced and (2) best able to keep up with the game. Also, it is not just physcial fitness but also the mental ability to quickly anticipate the game, something that comes from lots of experience and from having played the game oneself.
