NCS to expand tournament field

by pinella

At least on the boys side, the North Coast Section, has announced that it will consider expanding the tournament this year from the standard 12-team format to 14 or 16  teams depending on the number of qualified teams that submit appropriate applications.

Basically, that means that there probably won’t be any byes for the top-seeded teams and that teams like Piner, Healdsburg and maybe even Montgomery might be included.

Expansion will also be considered on the girls side, but because the schools in Marin don’t play girls soccer in the fall, the field usually doesn’t offer as many qualified teams.

The NCS will not notify anyone of the final brackets until they are posted on the NCS website at approximately between noon and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Fairly shameful if this happens. You shouldn’t change the rules prior to the start of the playoffs. The teams have worked hard all year to get the bye, have their players rest up etc. That’s the reward for playing well throughout the year. If you remove the bye (and I’m not opposed to this if it is known at the start of the year) then upsets will happen and a team that might have won the tournament under the rules that they were playing to, now goes home with nothing. This is ethically wrong.

id say leave the NCS how it has been.

Montgomery does not have a losing record, 9-9-3(7-6-1 nbl) and I believe the criteria is a .500 record in league or overall.

NCS enacted a specific rule which allows the seeding committee to expand the field, but the rule wasn’t enacted until the middle of this season– so if you follow the NCS closely, you would have known that the Division I boys field could be expanded above 12 teams.

As to McKinleyville, the solution is for NCS to place them in the small school division– raise the small school limit back to 700 or even 725 or 750. Then, instead of losing their first round playoff game by twelve goals, McKinleyville would only lose by three or four goals.

Casa grande beat analy 1 to 0 yesterday making them 4th place in SCL which makes them go above 500 with a winning record i believe it is fair to go with a 12 NCS not 14.

For example, Healdsburg has beaten casa twice compared to healdsburg one loss to casa. Overall Healdsburg is a young team compared to many other teams in the ncs. Healdsburg should go in because they have beaten Elsie Allen and Won the Prospecters Classic at Piner High. Should come out and see how small these kids are

Still waiting on posting of brackets as of 2:30pm. From what I can tell from NCS website, 17 Division I boys teams applied (includes automatic qualifiers)– 5 from MCAL, 5 from SCL, 5 from NBL and 2 from HDNL “Big Four”. Unless I misunderstand the NCS info, McKinleyville did not apply to claim their automatic qualifying spot as HDNL “Little Four” champion; if so, kudos to them for understanding how bad a blowout they would suffer in the first round and letting another more deserving team get a spot.

Brackets up as of 2:45pm. Boys Division I – a full 16 team bracket. Only applicant to not get a spot was Eureka of HDNL.

Girls Division I — 11 team tournament. Only applicant to not get a spot was El Molino. (Did Elmo really apply? Did they have a winning record overall or in league?)

Followup on girls Division I – teams need a .500 record overall, in league or against all Division I teams they played in order to be playoff eligible. NCS info shows only 12 teams applied and that one of them was Elmo.

Girls Division III- as expected Sonoma Academy is No. 1 seed and St. Vincent is No. 2 seed. Interesting that SV’s first game (quarterfinal round) will be at Rancho even though SV has a brand new turf field. Only 10 teams applied, so all 10 made it into the field– 3 of them have .500 or worse records.

Boys Division III — Sonoma Cty teams are S.Acad., Roseland and RV Christian. From Marin, M.Acad. (No. 1 seed) and Branson (No. 2 seed). Branson must play an away game in first round at St. Helena because they do not have a field with lights– NCS strongly prefers night games, even more so this year it appears. Calistoga is No. 4 seed– good field with lights so they get to host.

I can’t believe that MCHS didnt get the number 1 seed? The girls beat Monty on Friday night, a game that was supposed to determine the winner of the NBL! What was the point of having players play for no reason. Carrillo girls have been robbed, I hope it doesn’t effect their chances to make it to the final.

The point was to determine the NBL Champion and thus the automatic qualifying spot. Also, since the game ended in PK’s, the NCS regards it as a tie. So as far as NCS is concerned, MC tied Monty with MC as the home team– when visiting team gets a tie/draw, they can be regarded as having played better because they did not have home field advantage.

to STATs: Players never play for “no reason”. It is certainly better for a team to have a hard match a week before tournament play than not having any scrimmage! Both teams have a bye so they are lucky in a way that they got that chance! Also, either you can beat any team that comes up or you can’t. Carrillo has played Petaluma and ususally comes out ahead. In terms of preparation, it is better to have that type of game before the finals than playing a team that can’t challenge as hard. It is those easy games where anything can and does happen!
