Tonight’s (Oct. 30th) prediction

Montgomery goalie Megan Herring tries to stop penalty shot by Maria Carrillo's Michelle Flores, but the shot goes in for the winner Friday night.

Isn’t this just about perfect?

A playoff game before the playoffs. Montgomery and Maria Carrillo with identical 12-1-1 records in the NBL, they split their regular-season series and now they play for the North Bay League title.

A girls playoff game and no one can ever recall that happening on the girls side in the history of the NBL.

Two outstandings coaches – Debra LaPrath and Pat McDonald – matching wits.

A nice tuneup for the postseason.

And it’s the night before Halloween.

And for once the true futbol goes up against American football on a Friday night. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!

So, what’s gonna happen?

Monty’s the defending NBL champions, they have a solid, established program and in a season that everyone thought would be a rebuilding one, a season when they lose arguably their best player (Cammie Pearson) to injury aT the beginning of the season, they are still in a position to win the NBL again and advance deep into the North Coast Section playoffs.

Mara Carrillo comes to today’s 5 p.m. contest at Santa Rosa High with a squad that mostly looks like they just got off the bus from a U15 club contest. They are that young. But OMG are they talented. Seems like just about all LaPrath has to do is toss the ball out onto the field and walk back to the bench and write down another W.

Obviously, there is no grandiose soccer expertise here. Like most of you, I simply watch. And what I will watch for tonight is the play of the respective goalies. How assertive they are, how much team leadership they show from the back end of the field, how they react to the pressure.

And I’ll even toss out an extra prediction – the winner of this game will go on to be the overall NCS champ.

So, in a changing of the guard, here it is:

PREDICTION: Maria Carrillo 2, Montgomery 0

Final: Maria Carrillo 2, Mongomery 1 (MC won on PKs, 5-4)

winning is pks is not a victory by any stretch.
    how unfortunate.
    this was actually a tie.
and will be decided in NCS
    hopefully not in pks.

Someone will need to figure out how to beat Casa in an NCS playoff game. That hasn’t happened for the past two years….

Haha and winning in pk’s is not a victory?
did you misread the score? the pumas had more goals than the vikings, hence a victory. generally who ever score more times than the other team wins the game. how many world cup games, or champions league games are decided by pk’s? take the last world cup final for example. a victory is a one match, you shouldn’t have given up the pk and if you were any better than the pumas you would have found an equalizer before 90 minutes. “actually a tie” right then they both would have been crowned nbl winners. and everyone goes home happy

Bill finally admitted he knows little about soccer….reading his comments…we already knew that.

This latest example….his anxious waiting to watch the keepers. Which is actually amusing, since both are adequate….and neither is a stand out keeper by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry Die Hard, but it’s a tie!

ok SCL, when you can prove to me that scoring 2 goals and 1 goal are the same thing and that is a tie you win. NCS may call it a tie. But the reason “ties” go into overtime is so there can be a winner however the goal is scored. Liverpool just lost because a a beach ball redirected the ball into the goal. Quite unlucky and perhaps unfiair but by no means was it recognized as a tie. 2>1 equals puma’s win

Score was not 2-1, it was 1-1. PK’s only determine who the NCS “designated champion” of the NBL was. Prevailing in PK’s does not equal scoring a goal– PK’s after OT only determine one of two things: (1) which team is “champion” if game is a final or (2) which team moves on to next round, if game is not a final. If you have been around soccer long enough, you know this. NCS recognizes this and when analyzing Monty’s record and MC’s record, and listed the game as a tie (thus, as found on NCS website, Monty record is 19-1-2 and MC 16-2-2). Then take into account the fact that MC had home field advantage, and the result looks better for Monty.

soccer fan, im sorry but the ball hitting the back of the net equals a goal whether or not it’s on a pk or not. what do you call it if its not a goal? why wouldn’t they just play ro-sham-bow if it were just to decide a winner right? I mean given your team (which i hope your arguing for monty’s sake, if not im a little confused as to why your arguing) had the opportunity to take a pk also and went on to miss theirs doesn’t that say something? and it does decide two things, i couldn’t agree more, the “champion” (generally the team that wins the game by having more goals) and the team that moves on (again generally the team that wins the game)…. so i in the end your arguments are actually quite valid.

OK, Puma, check out the link above — NCS interprets a game which goes to PK’s to determine a “winner” as a tie. Check out FIFA’s website– the Final of the World Cup. Was it 2:1 Italy because Italy prevailed in PK’s? No, the official score is 1:1, with Italy being the Champion based on the tiebreaking procedure of PK’s.

Sorry, I should have written the link below where it says “Soccer Fan”. And here is the FIFA page on the 2006 matches, including the 1:1 Final wherein Italy prevailed as champion by way of PK’s (and it’s actually called Kicks from the Penalty Mark to be exact): http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/germany2006/results/index.html By the way, I have a better way to determine a “winner” than KFTPM, I will tell you about it sometime. :)

FIFA is good enough for me (NFHS and CIF/NCS follow along). Here you go:

    Dear Robert

A PSO is merely a tie-breaker and a match that is decided by a PSO is considered a draw (e.g. the 1994 and 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals).

    Hi,

A question, during world cups and other tournaments once we get to the elimination rounds at times teams end up in a draw even after extra time. Teams then go to a penalty shoot out to determine a winner.

Is the winner of the penalty shoot out considered the match winner? or considered the winner of the tie breaker(penalty shoot out)while the match is considered a draw?

Does FIFA register this match officially as draw? Or does it get registered as a win for the team that won the tie breaker?

    thank you for your time,

    Robert

    To the “other” Soccer Fan

Let it go – I am sure the girls have moved on – you are all over these blogs with the same thing – what are you after? A retraction? A “my mistake”? It’s girls high school soccer – not FIFA – gain some perspective, it’s just a draw for goodness sake!

To soccer fan(no caps)– not sure what you are trying to say, as Soccer Fan (caps) was saying exactly what you said: game was a draw. It looks like Soccer Fan was responding to Die Hard Puma, not you, but you agree with Soccer Fan so what’s your point.
