SRU, SCA, SRJC talent on display at SSU

Do Santa Rosa United United, Sonoma County Alliance and SRJC and the area high schools produce any college-worthy soccer talent? Ubetcha. And Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. a lot of that talent on the boys side will be on display in Rohnert Park as Sonoma State and Dominican play a non-conference game as they continue to tune-up for their respective conference races. Vikes’ and SRU products Ziegler, Elkins honored

A pair of Montgomery High and Santa Rosa United products on the Dominican University of California soccer teams have been selected to the 2010 Preseason All-Pacific West Conference teams. Alec Ziegler, a senior defender, was named to the conference’s second team. Zieger started 18 games a year ago, DU’s first in the PacWest, scoring three goals, one a game-winner. Junior midfielder Shayna Elkins, who started 19 goals with a pair of goals last season, was also named to the all-conference… Read More »

Condolences to Carrillo’s LaPrath

This is getting to be something we are not fond of at all. For the second time in a week, Corner Kicks is offering condolences to an Empire high school soccer coach on the loss of a parent. This time it is Maria Carrillo’s long-time girls’ soccer coach Debra LaPrath on the loss of her mother this week in Southern California. LaPrath, who coached the MCHS alumni game on Saturday, will return to the Puma team sometime next week.

SSU men, women in final tuneups

If they were pro baseball teams, you might say that the Sonoma State University men’s and women’s soccer teams were breaking training camp Saturday. Both will play their final scrimmage/exhibition games at home before embarking on their 2010 regular seasons. The SSU women will be first up with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Dominican University. Condolences to Newman’s Dixon

Corner Kicks would like to pass long our condolences to Cardinal Newman High head coach Paul Dixon on the recent passing of his mother back in Ireland. Dixon will be out of the country until next week and his long-time assistant Tom Corriveau will lead the team at this weekend’s Healdsburg Tournament. Newman’s tournament opener will at 4 p.m. Friday against Arcata at Healdsburg’s Rec Park.

Healdsburg boys tournament set to kickoff

OK, you have waited all year for this…. The Healdsburg Futbol Invitational kicks off on Friday with four boys high school soccer games, all at Rec Park in Healdsburg. Montgomery alumni games Saturday

Most times they are at the very least, shall we say, entertaining. We’ll see on Saturday when the annual Alumni soccer games will be played at Montgomery High. The welcome mat is out to all former Vikings’ soccer players to come and participate. The boys game will start at 1 p.m., and the girls game at 3 p.m. Now we’ll see if they can get up and down the field like they used to.
